password protecting website with .htaccess

Hi, Thank you for providing this amazing service free of charge. I have created a website under domains/domainname/public_html. I then followed the steps explained here https://docs.serv00.com/htaccess/ to password protect the site. This worked for a few days. Then the password I had set no longer allowed me to log in.

I then deleted the .htaccess and the .htpasswd files. I even removed the website completely and created it from scratch, as explained here: https://forum.serv00.com/d/168-how-do-i-reset-hosting. In that state, there was no prompt for a password but simply a direct referral to permission denied.

I then re-created the .htaccess and the .htpasswd files with the original username and password. The password prompt re-appeared but I still could not log in. Finally, I deleted the original username and password from the .htpasswd file and created a new user and password. Still I cant log in to the website.

Hello,

check the edit dates of the .htaccess and .htpasswd files; you also have access to the backup (in the "backups" directory in the home directory of the hosting account). You can also provide us with information about which website is being referred to in a private message.

Hi, thank you for your quick reply. It was a strange one. I tried removing the website again and noticed that the default index.html was accessible. Once I added my own html files to public_html via sftp, I got 403 Forbidden.

If I restore the default index.html, I can again access. In the end, created the html and uploaded the files via the GUI panel. Now it works. So the error must have been on my side.

I am thinking perhaps I would have needed to set permissions after uploading the files via sftp?

You didn't specify which domain you're referring to, so we can't check what mistake you made.
